Neurofeedback is a form of the therapy which is used to treat neurological (brain) inefficiencies. This is done by placing electrodes on the scalp in order to read the brain activity. The client receives feedback in the form of sound or visual images on a computer screen. The information or feedback assists the clients to adjust their brain activity.
Now that’s a mouthful that sounds complicated and quite daunting but it’s not really, let’s look at why we would use it. Here are some Typical 21st Century scenarios.
You feel :-
- anxious
- you find it difficult to fall asleep
- you wake in the early hours of the morning
- you find it difficult to focus at work
- you experience muscle tension particularly in your back and shoulders
- you experience nausea and digestive problems.
If only one session a week then R300.00 per session.
The medical aid will pay for neurotherapy.
The following comments were received from neurofeedback clients.
In addition to neurofeedback, most of my clients receive some Mindsight training which includes relaxation and self-awareness exercises. My method is to work closely with each client and receive regular feedback so as to meet each individual need.
My concentration is better and I seldom need Ritalin. I am more organised and when I have not completed my homework it is because I am feeling lazy not because I have forgotten it or lost it.
I feel so much calmer. My anxiety levels have lifted dramatically. Before neuro I was experiencing anxiety levels of a 9 or 10 out of 10. This was a daily occurrence. Now on a bad day I will experience levels of say 4 out of 10. I had a really bad relapse the other day and I would say it was about a 6 out of a 10. BUT it only lasted a little while. I was able to compose myself and contain the anxiety. Within ¾ of an hour it was gone whereas in the past it would have lasted for days if not weeks.
- I am no longer depressed. I am happy and content within myself and with what I have.
- My insomnia has improved. Where being unable to sleep was virtually a nightly event it now only happens once or twice a month
- My concentration has improved a lot and when interrupted, I am able to get back to what I was busy with a lot quicker than before.
- My self-awareness has improved and I am now a lot more in touch with my feelings/emotions.
